A Guide to Feasting in Athens: Gyros, Freddos and Moussaka

Hey Foodies! 👋

My recent solo travel adventure to Athens was a full-sensory experience: I soaked up the ancient history, I conquered my nerves, and most importantly? I ATE EVERYTHING. Seriously, Greek food is not just a cuisine — it’s a comfort! 🤤

If you're planning a trip and need a curated list of must-try dishes and the exact spots to find them (from authentic tavernas to modern cafes), grab a snack and read on! Here are the best eats and essential drinks that fueled my exploration of the Greek capital. 🇬🇷👇

1. The Essential Greek Coffee Fix ☕

Let’s start with the addiction: the Freddo.

  • The Drink: Freddo Cappuccino! This frothy, iced Greek coffee is the most refreshing, energizing fuel you can find. It’s light, creamy, and totally essential for long sightseeing days.

  • The Spot: I became obsessed after my first one at This is Loco. I quickly went back to this cute, modern spot for my morning Greek yogurt bowls, too. It’s the perfect spot for healthy brunch in Athens! I also went to Coffee Island around the corner from my hotel a few times for my freddo fix.

  • Vibe Check: I was sipping these on boat decks, in quiet squares, and everywhere in between. Warning: Highly addictive.

2. The Comfort Food MVP: Moussaka and Gyros 🥙

When you’re tired from conquering mountains or sailing the sea, you need the ultimate comfort meal. These two dishes nailed it!

  • Moussaka: I devoured this classic dish on my very first night at Anafiotika Cafe. The layers of seasoned meat, eggplant, and creamy béchamel were the perfect, hearty welcome to the city. If you’re looking for the best dinner with an Acropolis view, this spot is unbeatable.

  • Late-Night Gyros: After a long day of island hopping, I needed quick, delicious satisfaction. My go-to became the amazing Pork Gyros from Ambrosia, located right near the Hotel Syngrou Fix. Seriously, that seasoned meat wrapped in warm pita was the best late-night gyros in Athens!

3. Taverna Treasures and Salad Goals 🥗

Finding authentic, high-quality Greek food outside the city center is a must!

  • The Spot: Taverna Vakhos in the town of Delphi.

  • The Meal: After hiking up to the Temple of Apollo, I indulged in an incredibly fresh Greek Salad—the massive slice of real feta on top was divine!

  • Vibe Check: This is the kind of authentic meal you dream of: super fresh ingredients, incredible flavor, and stunning mountain views. Look for places slightly off the main tourist track for this kind of best authentic Greek food in Delphi.

4. Treats, Sweets, and Sensation 🍦

You can't end a perfect day without a little treat!

  • Loukoumades: These little honey-cinnamon donuts are a revelation! I grabbed mine from Lukumades for dessert near the end of my trip. It's an essential Athens dessert that feels like a warm hug.

  • Gelato Follia (Aegina): During my Saronic Gulf cruise adventure, I stopped on Aegina Island for their famous pistachios, but left with my favorite childhood treat: bubblegum gelato! The perfect cold treat after a swim!

5. Stylish & Healthy Stops 💖

Even on vacation, sometimes you crave color and greens!

  • Ellyz: After a big history day, I found balance at this outrageously pink, floral-filled cafe. I enjoyed a healthy Buddha bowl amidst the beautiful decor. It's the perfect spot for a girly, stylish, and healthy lunch in Monastiraki.

💖 Final Bite: Food is the heartbeat of any trip, and the food in Athens — from the humble street gyros to the classic Moussaka — is truly unforgettable. Go ahead, order the dessert, and get that second Freddo!
