How I Travel Around a 9-5 Job

“How do you travel so much while working full-time?”

It’s the question I get asked most often. The truth? I’m not a digital nomad, and I haven’t quit my job to wander the world. I work a standard 9-5 just like most of you! But over the years, I’ve learned how to bridge the gap between my career and my wanderlust.

Travel doesn’t have to be an "all or nothing" lifestyle. Here’s how I make it work. ✈️✨

1. The "Holiday Bridge" Strategy 🗓️

I don’t just pick random weeks for vacation. I am the queen of the "holiday bridge." If there’s a federal holiday on a Monday or Friday, that is my signal to book!

By layering my vacation days around existing long weekends, I can turn 4 days of PTO into a 9-day international adventure. I usually aim for 2–3 meaningful trips a year, ensuring every single vacation day is used to its fullest potential.

2. The "DINK" Privilege 💍

I acknowledge the privilege I have living a DINK (Double Income, No Kids) life. Having two incomes and no little ones to account for definitely makes it easier to save. However, it’s still about choices.

We are intentional with our money so we can spend it on what we actually value: experiences.

3. Thrifting & Dollar Store Hacks 🛒

People often assume travel requires a massive salary, but for me, it’s about where the "small" money goes. I’m a proud thrifter — most of my wardrobe is second-hand! I’m also a regular at the dollar store for household essentials and groceries.

By cutting back on daily consumerism and "stuff," I’m able to put more away for traveling comfortably for a few weeks of the year.

4. Economy in the Air, Comfort on the Ground ✈️

I have never flown business class. Honestly, every time I see the price of those tickets, I have a mini heart attack!

I would much rather fly economy and save those thousands of dollars to ensure I don't have to worry about finances once I actually land. To me, a seat is a seat — I’m saving the luxury for the destination, not the transit.

5. Quality Over Quantity 🌟

In a world of "travel influencers" who seem to be in a new country every week, I’ve learned that quantity does not equal quality. I love my 2–3 big trips a year.

Spending the rest of my time at home, living my normal working life and enjoying my routine, actually makes those travel moments feel more special and well-deserved. The anticipation is half the fun!

6. The "Staycation" Reset 🏡

When I'm not on a plane, I treat my weekends at home (or a trip to an Ontario cottage!) as a mental vacation.

Learning to find adventure in your own backyard prevents burnout between the big international hauls. It keeps the "travel spirit" alive without using a single day of PTO.

Travel is a choice and a jigsaw puzzle. It’s about fitting the pieces of your budget, your time, and your dreams together until they form a picture you love. You don’t need to quit your job to see the world—you just need a plan. 🗺️💼
