6 Things I Never Do as a Solo Female Traveller

Traveling the world solo is one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done, but it also comes with a unique set of "non-negotiables." Over 6 years of solo trips, I’ve realized that setting firm boundaries isn't about being afraid — it’s about being smart so I can keep exploring with confidence.

Whether I’m wandering through a city solo or planning to join a group walking tour, these are the six rules I never break to keep myself safe, grounded, and ready for the next adventure. ✨

I Never…

1. Drink Too Much 🍷

I love a glass of local wine or a craft beer as much as the next traveller, but I always stop after one (or maybe two, depending on the vibe).

When you’re solo, you are your own navigator, translator, and security team. I never want my judgment or my physical coordination to be compromised when I’m responsible for getting myself back to my hotel.

2. Stay Out Late 🌙

I’m a big fan of the "early bird" travel style. I love catching sunrises and morning market vibes, but once the sun goes down and the streets change energy, I’m usually heading back to my hotel.

I try to be back in my room or at least in my immediate neighborhood by the time it’s truly dark. There’s something so peaceful about a cozy night in with a book anyway!

3. Post on Social Media in Real Time 📱

This is a big one for my digital safety. While I love sharing my journey with you all, I never post my exact location while I am still there.

I wait until I’ve left the restaurant (and usually the city) before I hit "share." Protecting my current location is the easiest way to ensure my privacy and peace of mind.

4. Tell Strangers I’m Alone 🤫

"Is it just you?" is a question you’ll hear often. Even if I’m having a lovely conversation, I usually mention a "friend meeting me later" or "my partner waiting back at the hotel."

It’s a small white lie that creates a phantom companion and discourages anyone who might be looking for an easy target.

5. Prioritize Saving Money Over Safety 💸

Budgeting is important, but safety is an investment. If a hostel looks sketchy, if a street feels "off," or if the last bus of the night feels uncomfortable, I will pay for the Uber or the nicer hotel room every single time.

There is no "deal" worth compromising your intuition. If your gut says no, listen to it — even if it costs an extra $20.

6. Let My Phone Die 🔋

My phone is my map, my translator, and my emergency line. I never leave my hotel without a fully charged phone and a high-quality portable power bank (or two).

The moment my phone hits 30%, I’m plugging it in. Being "lost" is a lot less romantic when you don't have a way to find your way home!

Setting these boundaries doesn't take away from the adventure — it actually makes it better. When I know I'm safe, I can fully immerse myself in the beauty of the world.
